LDFAS Tour to West Country& Wales

Limpsfield Decorative and Fine Arts Society are arranging a tour to the West Country and Wales next May. There are still some places left and they are giving non-Nadfas members the opportunity to join them. The dates are 14th-18th May, 4 nights and 5 days.

Based in a 4-star hotel on the outskirts of Bristol the tour includes the following.

  1. Buscot Park, near Lechlade – a Palladian Georgian house which contains an interesting art collection and a quite superb Burne Jones mural “the legend of the briar rose”.
  2. Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff, which was virtually destroyed by a German land mine and was rebuilt immediately after the war, with sculptures by Epstein and John piper windows
  3. Cardiff Castle which was completely transformed in 1866 by William Burges at the behest of the then owner, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, probably the richest man in Britain at that time who had made his money from coal
  4. A walking tour of Bristol Blue with badge guides
  5. A private visit to Berkeley Castle which dates from the 12th century, has been in the same family ever since and was the scene of the murder of Edward 2nd in 1327
  6. Gloucester Cathedral with its wonderful Norman architecture and examples of medieval stained glass
  7. An afternoon at leisure in Regency Cheltenham
  8. Finally a visit to Tyntesfield, the Victoria Gothic extravaganza which was saved for the nation in 2002.

The cost is £375 pp based on 2 people sharing a room. This is excellent value as it covers bed, breakfast and dinner at a 4-star hotel, entrance charges to the various venues, guides and all gratuities.
